This book is a collection of chords used in over 45 Allan Holdsworth tunes, organized and categorized. Allan had an incredibly unique, unconventional and yet simple of understanding harmony and chords . Get an insight into those views and what makes his chord voicings so special and unique.

The strength of the book is really up to the person using it. Not only could it be used as a chord thesaurus to get new, more interesting chord choices, but to you can alter them for your own play style. Create your own chords using his voicings as a template. Or even using Allan's own harmonic concept to create your own unique voicings. Also included is a brief explanation of music theory and how Allan's approach can be confusing using our traditional music system, but how liberating it is once that system is abandoned.

One small warning. Since Allan was known for having large hands, some of the chords contained in this book can be to very difficult physically. There are also some tips on how to approach playing some of the more challenging ones. But fear not, as most of the chords contained in here do not require a huge stretch and can be relatively simple to play!

Originally published as a blog (A Thread of Lunacy: Appreciation and Analysis of the Otherworldly Music of Allan Holdsworth), this book is a biographical musical companion to the career of Allan Holdsworth, a guitarist revered by the greatest names in jazz and rock, such as Steve Vai, John McLaughlin, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, and countless others.
Starting off his career with bands such as The Tony Williams New Lifetime, Bruford, U.K., and Soft Machine, in the early 1980s Holdsworth began releasing music under his own name, with bands comprised of some of the most accomplished and respected players in rock and jazz.
Although this book is a perfect reference for Allan Holdsworth fans (containing detailed notes and interviews related to every single album he ever played on), another aim of this book is to help new listeners enter the frequently misunderstood universe of this “ahead-of-his-time” guitar genius.
